Viticulture

Vineyard

A one-hectare plot planted in 1930, Lagunazuri parcel is sitting at 571 metres, sheltered by the Sierra Cantabria in Rioja Alavesa. Located between Laguardia and Leza, it is our northernmost plot with a significant Atlantic influence. Maintaining the traditional bush vine training, we seek a return to our winegrowing roots.

This plot’s distinctive feature is its location within a gently undulating topography, situated in an east-west-oriented depression. The grey marls, -sedimentary rock rich in limestone- appear at a depth exceeding 150cm, probably resting upon sandstone slabs. This provides the soil with a substantial useful depth, facilitating unrestricted deep-rooted growth.

Process and aging

The 2019 harvest was quite reduced and extraordinary in quality. Due to irregular fruit set, the clusters were small and very loose. Thus, the grapes enjoyed perfect health conditions. The ripening phase started well, with moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights. This, combined with the absence of rain, allowed for a low incidence of pests and diseases throughout the cycle.

The harvest was manual, in 10 kg crates. Once in the winery, a pre-fermentative maceration was carried out, followed by fermentation in an open wooden tank, with gentle punching down, over a period of 14 days. The aging, for 16 months, took place in 500-liter French oak barrels.

Tasting

Color

Deep cherry red with a garnet hue, bright and deep.

Nose

Fresh and fragrant, dominated by aromas of red fruit and forest berries, such as strawberries and raspberries, with a subtle and well-integrated touch of wood.

Mouth

On the palate it’s juicy, silky, and broad, with notes of forest fruit, red fruit, blackberries, and subtle, elegant toast hints. A wine with great freshness and aromatic intensity, and a nuanced, elegant, long finish.
