Viticulture

Vineyard

Las Naves is a small 1.1-hectare vineyard planted pre-1902 in Elvillar, at an elevation of 540-560 metres above sea level. It is a pre-phylloxera dry-farmed plot, featuring bush vines cultivated in clay-sandy soils. The soil’s limited useful thickness restricts development, vigour, and yields.

Tempranillo is the primary variety, accompanied by a small percentage of other grapes such as Garnacha, Graciano, and Viura. The blending process begins in the vineyard, as everything is harvested and fermented together, mirroring traditional practices to capture an authentic expression of this unique terroir.

Process and aging

The 2019 harvest was quite reduced and extraordinary in quality. Due to irregular fruit set, the clusters were small and very loose. Thus, the grapes enjoyed perfect health conditions. The ripening phase started well, with moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights. This, combined with the absence of rain, allowed for a low incidence of pests and diseases throughout the cycle.

The entire block is hand-harvested at the same time, using crates, to maintain the original field blend of the varieties planted in this historic vineyard.

Cold maceration and fermentation take place in an open-top oak vat, with gentle punching down for 12 days. Aged for 16 months in a 2,000-litre French oak foudre, followed by bottle ageing.

Tasting

Color

Deep intense cherry red colour.

Nose

Intense and alluring. Wild fruit and floral aromas take centre stage -particularly violets- alongside hints of mountain herbs. At the same time, light mineral touches and subtle spicy notes appear.

Mouth

Rich, dense and aromatic, with forest fruits and floral flavours. A fresh, effortlessly elegant wine with a long., enveloping finish.
