Viticulture

Vineyard

Planted in 1964, the Nogal vineyard spans 1.3 hectares in Elvillar, sitting at 570-580 metres above sea level. Named after the walnut tree (“nogal“ in Spanish), gracing its lower section,

this vineyard predominantly features Tempranillo, complemented by Viura at its highest point in the headland, known as “la cabezada”. Here, traditional dry-farmed bush vines thrive in deep, clay-limestone soils with occasional marine fossils, displaying modest fertility. Due to these distinctive conditions, the vegetative cycle is shorter than other areas, resulting in lower yields, impressive concentration, and deep hue.

Process and aging

The 2019 harvest was quite reduced and extraordinary in quality. Due to irregular fruit set, the clusters were small and very loose. Thus, the grapes enjoyed perfect health conditions. The ripening phase started well, with moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights. This, combined with the absence of rain, allowed for a low incidence of pests and diseases throughout the cycle.

The manual harvest, in 10 kg crates, began on time, and thanks to the good late summer and early fall conditions, the fruit ripening was excellent. Once in the winery, a pre-fermentative maceration was carried out, followed by fermentation in an open wooden tank, with gentle punching down, over a period of 14 days. Aging lasted 20 months, both in 500-liter French oak barrels and in concrete eggs.
